FAQs
What is an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is an opportunity for you to earn and learn at the same time. Apprenticeships usually last 12 months but could be longer. You would get a training salary and this can vary depending on whether you are a young person or an adult. Whilst on the apprenticeship you would work towards a vocational qualification recognised by employers.

Can I still go to university?

Doing an apprenticeship does not stop you from going to university in the future, however almost all apprenticeships are not available to university graduates. Some apprenticeships are sponsored degrees which means your employer would cover the cost of your university education in a specific subject (e.g. Business).

Who can do an apprenticeship?

Anyone above the age of 16 can do an apprenticeship. Some vacancies may only be open to candidates from a certain age group or borough. Advertised vacancies should have this stated.

What are the entry requirements and what will I need to get started?
Entry requirements for an apprenticeships can be 4 - 5 GCSE's A - C including English and Maths, but this can vary, check the entry requirements on the vacancy. You will also usually need a CV and covering letter as well as good interview skills.

Where can I find vacancies?

The best place to start looking is online but make sure you spread the word with people you know, that you are looking - your contacts can be on the look out for you too!
There are three main ways to find opportunities:
1. Via the employer - remember an apprenticeship is a job
2. Via the training provider - because an apprenticeship also involves a course
3. Via advertisers that show you the apprenticeship 'package' - as it is a combination of a job and a course.

What is a degree apprenticeship?

This is a type of apprenticeship (i.e. a paid job combined with a course of study like any apprenticeship) where the course results in you gaining a degree qualification, such as a BA or BSc. Usually the company you work for will pay your tuition fees so you don't have to take out a loan.
